I ♥ NY

Pauline / 07.05.10 / 08:10 / ART, INSPIRATIONAL THOUGHTS
Louise Brooks

Louise Brooks, was an American dancer, model, showgirl and silent film actress, famous for pioneering the bobbed haircut.

It’s no secret that I’m a craver for fashion exhibitions – and I’m distressed about missing out on the new exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The exhibition American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity focuses on the archetypes of American style from the years 1890 to 1940, and feature fabulous style icons such as Louise Brooks, Anna May Wong and the Gibson girl phenomenon (a creation of American artist Charles Dana Gibson).

Curated by Andrew Bolton, the exhibition is laid out as a series of panoramas, each exploring how evolutions in women’s dress reflected revolutions in their social and economic status.

The Belgian fashion house Maison Martin Margiela is indeed visible on an international scale. The newly launched Suite Ile aux Oiseaux at Les Sources de Caudalie near Bordeaux, an installation in the über-trendy concept store 10 Corso Como in Milan and from 5 June an exhibition at London’s Sommerset House celebrating the brands 20 years anniversary.

Martin Margiela is known for many things: the secrettnes of his identity, his innovative and provoking designs, his way of communicating with the outside world solely by fax and last but not least his pioneering and original way of displaying and presenting his collections both at shows, in look books and in his stores with signature elements such as the use of whites, cotton fabrics, ‘trompe l’œil’, mix of styles and époque, and hints of humour creating a distinctive atmosphere. One thing is for sure it is always a fantastic and a creative injective experience to visit a Maison Martin Margiela store, exhibition, show or installation.

NEWSPEAK: BRITISH ART NOW – A MUST SEE

Pauline / 28.04.10 / 15:06 / ART

Barry Reigate, Real Special Very Painting, 2009

On 2 June, the Saatchi Gallery will open its largest show since moving to Chelsea in 2008. Entitled Newspeak: British Art Now, the exhibition will feature some of the most exciting artists to have emerged in the UK in the last few years who are still largely unknown in the wider art world.

Through sculpture, painting, photography and installation, the artists explore issues such as class, consumerism and the phenomenon of instant success culture, often with a distinctly British dry wit.

British Art Now features a selection of works by Hurvin Anderson, Karla Black, Pablo Bronstein, Steven Claydon, William Daniels, Matthew Darbyshire, Tim Ellis, Anne Hardy, Sigrid Holmwood, Iain Hetherington, Scott King, Alastair MacKinven, Goshka Macuga, Rupert Norfolk, Mark Pearson, Peter Peri, Ged Quinn, Clunie Reid, Barry Reigate, Daniel Silver, Fergal Stapleton, Clare Stephenson, Phoebe Unwin and John Wynne.

A must see, and I’m sure a great inspiration to all ‘artoholics’ and people with creative minds.

Once dubbed a “futurist” for his cutting-edge designs, Helmut Lang is now looking to his legacy, donating 25 signature items to the Bath Fashion Museum’s “Turn of the Century” exhibition.

The designer, who has been working as an artist since stepping down from his label in 2005, was noted for his architectural approach to fashion. His sharp lines and precise designs epitomised 1990s fashion.

In recent years, Lang has donated a number of designs to 16 galleries around the world, including London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, the Musée de la Mode in Paris and Japan’s Kyoto Costume Institute.

Damn This Place Richard Denne

Works on paper seem to be breeding like rabbits. When you look around, and, from the Frieze Art Fair to the upcoming London Original Print Fair, works on paper are the hottest thing to buy, with original limited edition prints by big names taking crown.

In less than two weeks the London Original Print Fair will open its doors at the Royal Academy or Arts (at Piccadilly). Here you’ll find works by Picasso, Hirst, Rembrandt, Hockney, Goya, Matisse – the list goes on and on.

Many of the world’s master printers and a number of trusting fin art publishers are making London into a hub for prints.

The Museum of Everything

“Listen bud, my ship just came in and I got CASH TO BLOW! I need pictures and prices pronto, so hurry it up or I’ll go to some other museum shop with a better selection and hotter staff. Here’s how to reach me …”

is how your email will start when clicking on the ‘contact the shop’ button at The Museum of Everything’s site.

And yes, you might have guessed by now that The Museum of Everything is no ordinary museum! Tucked away down an unassuming residential street in Primrose Hill (fashionable area in London), the Museum of Everything is the only public space in London dedicated to outsider art – works created by untrained, unintentional an unseen creators in society.

For its first exhibition (it opened in October 2009), the museum invited leading international artist, curators and cultural figures to select over 200 works by outsider artists, spanning from illustration, painting and sculpture.

This is a place to wile away many an hour just absorbing and enjoying.

A true hidden gem worth looking for!

BEAUTY OBSESSION

Stomach fat surgically removed during 'tummy tuck' operation

Our fascination with beauty is back in the media’s attention after Germans most popular women’s magazine Brigitte has declared they will exclusively use ‘normal people’ as models. Therefore, Zed Nelson’s exhibition Love Me could not be more relevant than right now.

His images reflect on the cultural and commercial forces that drive a global obsession with youth and beauty – images so scarily tight connected to the fashion industry. Love Me explores the beauty industry’s strong power and our collective insecurity, vanity and fear of ageing.

Some of the images have previously been shown at Tate Britain’s ‘How We Are – Photographing Britain,’ but is for the first time presented together in one single exhibition.

Fascinating, interesting and scary!
