PATRICIA SATC-FIELD

The SATCH-fewer has yet again stroked every corner of the world. Willingly or unwillingly that series has affected us all one way or the other. Although I think everything has gotten a bit too much – call it SATCH-mania if you like – I must admit that exactly that series was part of my survival-kit when comforting my lonely self the first couple of months after moving to London.

One thing is the characters and the themes; another is the clothes who are characters in their own right. For 15 years Patricia Field has worked as the Emmy Award-winning costume designer for the oestrogen-heavy television series and its two movie adaptations.

I found this interesting interview with the stylist who has been a fixture on the New York fashion scene since opening her boutique in 1966. Enjoy!

Q.

Looking back on the 15 years of “Sex and the City,” how accurately do you think the series and the films reflect the fashions of the time?

A.

I think we initiated rather than reflected. It’s not a documentary reflecting a reality; it’s a hyper reality with the intention of entertaining and pleasing people’s fantasy and imagination.

What trends have you initiated in the sequel? I mean, let’s face it, I single-handedly brought back Halston. [Laughs]. That would be a trend. Halston represents to me American fashion at its finest — elegance, simplicity, not adornment. Frankly, I was getting really weary of all these mad shapes coming at me. I yearned for chic simplicity and right away I thought of Halston. This to me is the most important fashion statement that I made in “Sex and the City 2.”

Were there any changes in the characters that you had to factor in this time round? I’m really not a psychiatrist or anything like that, but I noticed a very big personal change in Cynthia Nixon and it was really inspirational for me. Physically, she had lost a lot of weight and changed her hairstyle. She was always a great actress — I think the best of the four — but I felt more of a happy, peaceful calm from her, and it shows. When you are happy and at peace with a smile on your face, that really is the most attractive thing about a person. Of course, if you get skinny and become a sample size, that opens up new possibilities. But on a deeper and more motivating level, I think it starts from deep inside. I can only trim the tree.

Do you think Miranda’s character lost some of her original qualities by becoming so glamorous? No, she’s still the same character, but it’s just the way she delivers it and how she looks. She’s definitely undergone a transformation, but she didn’t exactly go from black to white.

Do you ever worry that the characters’ fashion sense is too over the top for fans to relate to? No, it’s the opposite. What I think creates the fan is that sort of hyper real, fantastical delivery of the visuals. The fans would be very disappointed if there wasn’t an elevation or a step up. This is why “Sex and the City” has succeeded in creating an exclusive club of a billion women around the world who all speak the same language. It liberates their fantasies and imagination.

You’re an expert at interpreting a character’s personality through her style. How good are you at reading people in real life based on their personal style? I’m pretty good at it, but I don’t walk around trying to figure out people by what they are wearing. The way you dress yourself is a form of self-expression, and a way of communicating to others who you are. But style is broader than just fashion — it’s not only the way you dress, but also how you decorate your home, the books you read. It all runs together. The more ways you can express yourself the better, because then you are communicating at a higher level.

THE LBD STILL RULES

Audrey Hepburn’s black Givenchy dress from Breakfast At Tiffany’s is ‘top of the frocks’, a survey, conducted by DVD rental film Lovefilm to mark the release of the second Sex And The City movie, found yesterday.hepburn_381721s

The smart gown, which she wore as Holly Golightly in the ever-popular film was judged greatest female screen outfit.

Hepburn’s top gown showed that age was no bar to glamour – her outfit made its appearance almost half a century ago in 1961. One of the three dresses produced for the film sold for more than £400,000 at auction four years ago.

Style icon Sarah Jessica Parker is ranked 10th for the Vivienne Westwood wedding dress for the first Sex And The City movie.

Style queen Hepburn landed a second entry at number six with the white dress and bonnet combo she wore at the races in My Fair Lady.

Lovefilm editor Helen Cowley said: “Audrey Hepburn has truly made that little black dress a fashion staple which has stood the test of time despite competition from some of the most stylish females around.

“As Sarah Jessica Parker and co-stars prepare to provide the next fashion fix for women everywhere, it’ll be interesting to see if their latest threads can make the same impact.”

TOM DIXON: “ALL POWER TO THE DESIGNERS”

Pauline / 26.05.10 / 16:22 / INSPIRATIONAL THOUGHTS

TomDixon

Since moving to London 6 years ago, I have been a great fan of Tom Dixons many genius design projects and objects. At this year’s ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair) the British designer presented his new INDUSTRY line, as well as the first in a series of limited-edition, self-published books to be updated and re-released every few months. Dixon also hosted the Flash Factory, a hands-on booth where his $175, digitally-manufactured Etch lamp will be made on the spot.

Conceived for the ICFF and last month’s Milan Furniture Fair, Etch demonstrates Dixon’s hopes for the design industry of the future, wherein individual designers will control the entire design process, from concept to consumption, offering mass customization to consumers – nice, interesting and intriguing idea don’t you think?

SOCIAL STUDIES

Tavi Gevinson, queen of personla style bloggers

Tavi Gevinson, queen of personal style bloggers

In the suddenly web-obsessed world of fashion, bloggers are some of the industry’s brightest stars. But it’s one group of bloggers–not those of us who report on news, or those tracking trends–who garner the greatest amount of spotlight.

Personal style bloggers put themselves out there. Not only do they share their favorite fashions, trends, and ideas, they also take pictures of themselves wearing their favorite looks on a daily basis.

Fashionista’s – a recognized New York based online magazine/news/blog fashion site – compiled a list of the most influential personal style bloggers right now: The ones really worth the advertising campaigns, endorsement deals and guest design stints.

Interesting reading indeed…

1. Tavi Gevinson

www.thestylerookie.com

14-year-old blogger Tavi Gevinson appears unstoppable. Not only does the fashion industry lover her and respect what she has to say, she’s become a sort of a teen sensation–a first for fashion journalism.

2. Susanna Lau, aka Susie Bubble

www.stylebubble.co.uk

Lau’s one of those rare bloggers that’s also an amazing stylist. Her upfront and unassuming dialogue allows her talent for making anything look good shine. The London-based Lau, who recently ended a stint at Dazed Digital, is also known for introducing unknown designers to a larger audience.

3. Rumi Neely

www.fashiontoast.com

The 25-year-old Neely’s success can be credited to her highly-constructed photo shoots, which look more like amateur magazine editorials than a family album. Since launching the blog in 2007, Neely’s designed for RVCA. She’s also repped by NEXT modeling agency.

4. Joanna Goddard

www.joannagoddard.blogspot.com

Magazine writer Joanna Goddard’s blog is a mix of personal style pictures, recipes, fashion and diary entries. The popularity of A Cup of Jo can be attributed to its accessibility. Goddard’s the person we all want to be, but she’s nice about it.

5. Hanneli Mustaparta

www.hanneli.com

We didn’t include photographers on this list because they don’t typically photograph themselves that often, but Norwegian model-turned-blogger Hanneli Mustaparta’s different. Not only do we want to look like her, we want to shoot like her, too.

6. Alix Bancourt

www.thecherryblossomgirl.com

Bancourt, who’s based in Paris and started The Cherry Blossom Girl in 2007, might not have as big of a following Stateside, but her influence is growing. She’s got that certain je ne sais quoi style-obsessed Americans love.

7. Bryan Boy

www.bryanboy.com

The blog that started it all. Bryan Boy launched his personal diary back in 2004, soon enough, he was buddies with Marc Jacobs. While Bryan doesn’t post stories every day, he does have loyal fans who keep coming back. As well as a good amount of advertising.

8. Ji

www.luxirare.com

Ji, the founder of Luxirare, takes lots of photos–of herself, the amazing el Bulli-inspired food she makes, and the beautiful clothes she designs. But you’ll never see her face. And that’s the beauty of Luxirare–It’s less about the person and more about the product and the mystique around the product. (Talk about building a brand!)

9. Gala Darling

www.galadarling.com

New Zealand-born Darling lives and works in New York, where she blogs, writes and offers to do speeches for a hefty fee. Her unapologetically positive approach has earned her a significant readership.

10. Jane Aldridge

www.seaofshoes.com

Aldridge, 18, is the girl with everything. Even before Chanel was loaning her dresses to wear to the Crillion Ball, the Texas debutante had closets full of YSL, Givenchy…the list goes on. Some love her fashion sense–she designed a collection for Urban Outfitters, in fact–some envy her lifestyle to the point of utter hatred.

PECHAKUCHA NIGHT IN LONDON

Pauline / 19.05.10 / 09:24 / INSPIRATIONAL THOUGHTS

pechaKucha

I’ve just experienced my second PechaKucha night – this time in London’s Design Museum – and again I left the event with a buzzing mind of inspiration, new ideas and amazement of such creative talents.

For those of you who might not now what PechaKucha is, PechaKucha Night originates from Tokyo. The first event took place in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat”, it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It’s a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace.

This time interesting creative’s from the design/architecture and art world presented their projects. Among others Danish (but London based) Nina Tolstrup who presented her innovative sustainable pallet chairs (shortlisted for this years Brit Insurance Designs of the Year Awards)

and Giles Miller who showed his amazing artwork in cardboard – especially the wall he made for the Stella McCartney flagship store in Paris was incredible.

Alexander Wang shorts trend ss2010

Showing some leg has never been more fashionable than this forthcoming spring and summer – from hotpants to baggy bloomers, the tinnier, the more on-trend.

The short trend mirrors the revival of the feminine and leg-flashing tendencies. Designers such as; Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Prada, Fendi, Alexander Wang and Danielle Scutt, offered a colourful and versatile cavalcade of shorts in their collections. From the satin to the bubble shorts all create the desired impression when paired with the right silhouette.

The trend dubbed by UK Vogue as “hotpantaloons” are worn under blazers or slouchy tops for this season’s style chic. These bloomers take their inspiration from tap pants, which ruled this season’s runways.

HOCKNEY EMBRACES THE iPad

Pauline / 14.05.10 / 08:45 / ART

David Hockney

One of my favourite contemporary English artists David Hockney has swapped his sketchpad for an iPad.

He sees the latest hi-tech gadgetry as a way for traditional drawing, using the hand, to make a comeback. He told the Evening Standard: “The iPad is far more subtle, in fact it really is like a drawing pad. They will sell by the million. It will change the way we look at everything from reading newspapers to the drawing pad.”

The iPad is the newest example of Hockney’s experimental streaks; cameras, faxes, printers, mirrors, oil, watercolour and pencil have all been used. And in the last year he has created many paintings on his iPhone.

“What is also unique is that with the iPad you can actually watch a playback of your drawing. I have never watched myself actually drawing before.”

Hurray for people in there seventies still open minded and ready to embrace the newest technology.

DANISH DELIGHT

Pauline / 10.05.10 / 13:43 / FASHION NEWS

Caroline Brasch Nielsen

Danish when it’s best – Italian Vogue has selected the hottest new face to be the Danish rising super model star Caroline Brasch Nielsen.

“The new way of searching models includes the wide range offered by Scandinavian countries as new hot spots…and Caroline Brasch Nielsen sprouts from that range” says Marilena Borgna from Vogue.it and continues, “the reason why we chose her is because she is really hot!”

The 179cm tall girl from Copenhagen has already impressed at last season’s fashion weeks – Chanel, Balenciaga, Dries van Noten, YSL and Louis Vuitton is just a few of the catwalks she dominated.
